The New Mayor Vows a 'Fresh Chapter' for New York City in Maiden Speech
On his initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” America's largest city, promising “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious start to his tenure.
A Historic Figure
The 34-year-old figure, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.
“A time such as this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the public whose hold the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.
Defying suggestions to temper hopes, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will govern expansively and audaciously.”
Governing with Democratic Socialist Ideals
Mamdani did not shy away from his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my ideals for worry of being called radical,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.
The swearing-in was a dual event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over political establishments.
An Ambitious Platform
Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:
- Subsidized daycare
- No-cost bus transit
- A halt to rent increases for nearly 1 million households
- A trial program of city-run grocery stores
The estimated $10 billion price tag of these services may be challenging to secure. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the richest residents and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Facing External Headwinds
The new mayor will deal with skepticism from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over offensive past tweets.
Mamdani has moved to ease these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly cordial.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani concluded his speech with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
